Triskaidekaphobia
2016-03-14
It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen.
Written in March 2016. An experiment with a 13/4 time signature, split various ways between the instruments.
The main motif originalted in an improv recording I did on March 10, 2016. In its first iteration, it was in 12/4, rather than 13/4, with the last beat of every bar here absent. It wasn't until - appropriately enough - March 13, a few days later, that I went back over the recording and got the idea to add the last beat in there (and also use the tape delay effect).
There's some contrary motion going on in the electric piano; the bottom notes of each chord spell out a line that is the inverse of the top notes. I tried to bring that out as much as possible, but my mixing skills are still pretty shoddy.
One last fun fact - this is the only song I've ever accidentally fallen asleep to while writing.
